Participation & Eligibility

Who can participate in the series?

The North West Trail Running Series is open to runners of all backgrounds and skill levels. We encourage everyone to experience the beauty of Tasmania's trails.

Is the event inclusive?

Absolutely. We celebrate and acknowledge individuals of all gender identities, including non-binary and all-gender people. We are dedicated to fostering an inclusive environment for every participant.

Is there a minimum age for participants?

Short Course: Under 13 with an adult, 13+ solo.
Medium Course (R1 & R2): 13+. Under 13 not permitted.
Medium Course (R3): 16+ solo or 13+ with an adult. Under 13 not permitted.
Long Course: 16+. Under 16 not permitted.
Age is determined by your age in this calendar year (January to December).

Can I bring my dog to the event?

Unfortunately, no dogs are permitted on any of the race courses due to safety and wildlife protection regulations in Tasmania trail areas. Dogs are allowed at the event hub (start line) and can run down the finish chute with you.

Gear & Safety

What gear is required for the night race?

Conditions are changeable and cold. Consider your duration and the weather. We recommend: phone with Emergency+ app, whistle, vest, water, snake bandage, space blanket, grippy trail shoes, waterproof jacket, thermals, beanie, buff, gloves, food, and a first aid kit.

Are there snake bandages required?

While not strictly mandatory for every round, we strongly recommend all runners carry a snake bandage. This is not necessarily for snake bites, but in case of other minor injuries.

Are hiking poles allowed?

Yes, hiking poles are allowed on all courses, however, we don't think they are necessary at Rounds 1 and 2. Given Round 3 is more challenging, you may wish to use them here. We just ask that you be mindful of other runners, particularly on narrow single-track sections of the trail.

When do registrations close?

Entries are open now and close 30 minutes before each round starts. Please note that on-the-day entries incur a $10 additional charge.

Can I get a refund if I can't race?

General FAQs

I’m a slow runner/walker, can I still participate?

Yes. The series is designed to be inclusive and welcoming for runners and walkers of all abilities. We’ve set generous cut-off times so you can walk most, or even all, of the course. If you’re keen, come along for a fun day out and give it a go.

What is the Run Nation Film Festival?

The Run Nation Film Festival is a curated collection of inspiring short films about running and adventure. Tickets for registered participants: Free. Tickets for non-registered: $10. Kids under 16: Free. Screening is at 6pm on Friday night of Round 3 in the Farm Barn, Friday, 28th of August 2026.

Can I listen to music?

We strongly recommend that you don’t. You need to be able to hear instructions. If you must run with music: Use only one earbud, and turn it off in busy areas. Ideally, leave the music at home and soak up the trail atmosphere instead.

Will I get a medal?

There are no finisher medals for individual races. Runners who finish all 3 races will receive the Triple Crown Finishers Medal. In addition, the top 3 male and female runners in each race will receive a medal.

What happens if it's raining?

In short, you will get wet. Raining can enhance the dramatic feel of trail running. Nonetheless, if a race cannot take place for safety reasons, our risk management team will monitor events closely.

What if extreme weather is predicted?

We closely monitor environmental conditions, maintaining communication with authorities. In the event of a cancellation, we will notify you via email and provide webpage updates. Unless informed otherwise, please attend the event as scheduled.
