The Series

The North West Trail Running Series is a three-round trail running series held across Tasmania’s North West. Each round showcases a different landscape and style of trail, from farmland and flowing singletrack to dramatic MTB and mountain terrain.

Tear through private farmland across open paddocks, farm tracks, and single trail. A big, bold introduction to trail running for first-timers and a fast, fun hit-out for experienced runners.

Hit the epic Wild Mersey MTB Trails for a high-speed tour of some of Tasmania’s best flowing singletrack. Almost entirely on single trail, this round is all about rhythm, flow, and fun.

Ignite your headlamp for a night-time adventure through the Dial Range. Diverse, technical, and dramatic under lights, this round is challenging but achievable for prepared runners.

Series Championship Points

The North West Trail Running Series overall champions are decided by the total points earned based on your finishing position in each of the three races. This system ensures a fair, transparent, and encouraging competition across the entire series.

The Points Table
  • 1st: 20 points
  • 2nd: 18 points
  • 3rd: 16 points
  • 4th: 14 points
  • 5th: 12 points
  • 6th: 10 points
  • 7th: 8 points
  • 8th: 6 points
  • 9th: 4 points
  • 10th to last finisher: 2 points
Categories & Eligibility

Points are tracked separately for the following course categories:

  • Short Course
  • Medium Course
  • Long Course

Points can only be tallied for an individual within the same course category. If you want a shot at the crown, you must race in the same category across the whole series.

Champions are crowned based on their total cumulative points at the end of the series. You remain eligible for the championship standings even if you do not compete in all three rounds, though it's recommended you do to ensure maximum points.

Tie-Break Process

In the friendly event of a points tie, we use a clear step-by-step process to decide the winner:

  1. Head-to-head results in race 1. If there is a draw in race 1, we will look at race 2, and then race 3.

  2. If a winner can still not be decided after completing step 1, we may have to resort to a classic Paper, Scissors, Rock...although we doubt it will come to that.

Got questions? We're here to help. Reach out to the team at nwtrs.tas@outlook.com and we'll get back to you soon.

We are committed to ensuring a fair and transparent competition and will address any questions or disputes promptly.

Participants are reminded that these rules are designed to ensure a clear and equitable determination of the Overall Series Champions. The goal is to recognize the most outstanding performances across the series, while also providing a structured and fair method for resolving any ties that may arise.

We appreciate everyone’s understanding and cooperation in adhering to these guidelines, and we wish all competitors the best of luck in their races.

Happy running!

Medals & Awards

We keep our focus on the trails, not the trinkets. There are no finisher medals for individual races, but there are special awards for those who go the distance.

NWTRS Race Rules

1. Course Completion & Shortcuts

All participants must complete the marked course as set by the organisers. Any deviation from the course, whether intentional or not, may result in penalties or disqualification, as outlined below:

• Intentional shortcuts taken to gain an advantage: Disqualification.
• Unintentional course errors (missing a marker, not following course notes, etc.): 10 minutes added per kilometre missed, rounded up to the nearest kilometre (e.g. missing 1.2 km = 20 minutes).

• Deviation caused by organiser marking error: The Race Director may adjust finish times, re-route runners, or nullify affected results if fairness cannot be restored.

2. Safety & Recommended Gear

As the NWTRS is a self-supported event, we recommend all participants carry the following gear as a minimum. Ultimately, you are responsible for your own safety.

Short Course:
• Appropriate clothing & footwear
• 1x mobile phone, charged
• 1x seam-sealed waterproof jacket (if wet)

Medium/Long Course:
• 1x compression bandage
• 1x mobile phone, charged
• Water (500ml-1000ml)
• 1x emergency space blanket (Long Course Only)

3. Headphones & Awareness

We recommend not using headphones. Trail running is meant to be experienced completely. If you must use them, bone conduction headphones are permitted, or in-ear (single ear only) provided they are not worn on roads. You must remain aware of your surroundings at all times.

4. Environmental Responsibility

No littering. Carry all waste with you. Littering may result in disqualification. Respect the trails, wildlife, landholders, and other trail users at all times.

5. Outside Assistance

Outside assistance is not permitted anywhere on the course. Pacing (having someone run with you who is not a registered participant) is not permitted unless specifically stated for that event.

6. Cut-Off Times

Courses are designed to be completed within reasonable timeframes. Any participant deemed far behind schedule may be withdrawn for safety reasons. Each distance will have Tail Walkers to ensure everyone makes it through safely.

7. Withdrawals & Injuries

If you withdraw, you must inform the Race Director as soon as possible. Failure to notify may result in search and rescue being initiated at your expense.

8. Protests & Appeals

Any disputes must be submitted to the Race Director within 30 minutes of finishing. The Race Director’s decision is final.

9. Behaviour & Conduct

Respect volunteers, staff, and fellow participants. Aggressive behaviour may result in disqualification. These rules protect you and the spirit of the NWTRS.
